The Recast Service Regulation

Service of documents in EU member states under Regulation (EU) 2020/1784

Serving legal papers across EU borders is now more streamlined, thanks to Regulation (EU) 2020/1784.

Regulation (EU) 2020/1784, also known as the Recast Service of Documents Regulation, governs the cross-border service of judicial and extrajudicial documents in civil and commercial matters within EU Member States. In force since 1 July 2022, it replaces Regulation (EC) No 1393/2007 and aims to streamline and modernize how documents are served across borders in the European Union.

This regulation enhances legal certainty, reduces delays, and ensures that parties in different Member States are properly informed of proceedings.

What is The Recast Service Regulation or Regulation (EU) 2020/1784?

The Recast Service Regulation, officially known as Regulation (EU) 2020/1784, provides a modernized legal framework for the service of judicial and extrajudicial documents across European Union Member States in civil and commercial matters. This Regulation replaces the earlier Service Regulation (EC) No 1393/2007, aiming to simplify and speed up cross-border service of process while ensuring legal certainty and respect for procedural rights.

By establishing uniform procedures and designating central authorities in each Member State, the Regulation helps legal professionals and courts efficiently serve documents anywhere within the EU. This reduces administrative burdens, minimizes delays, and promotes smoother cooperation between countries—benefiting law firms, businesses, and individuals involved in cross-border legal proceedings.
